2013 Team DC Champions Award Winners Announced!

Posted on by Team DC in blog, Past Events | Leave a comment

We are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2013 Team DC Champions Awards honoring leaders in the LGBT sports Community, including:

The MVP Award recognizes individuals that have made a significant contribution to their sport club or tournament over the past year.   This year’s MVP Awards go to:
  • Jerry Langon of the DC Front Runners for his leadership in the creation of the first annual Pride Run held on June 7.  Not only did the event sell out, but part of the proceeds will benefit the Team DC College Scholarship Fund.  Jerry was also one of the organizers of the Front Runners recent 30th Anniversary celebration and is famous for his accomplishment of running a marathon on ALL Seven Continents which include Antarctica!
  • Melvin Thomas of Stonewall Bocce for his tireless efforts in helping to create Stonewall Bocce, the first LGBT Bocce League in DC.  The addition of Bocce not only continues to expand local sport options, but helps engage more people into sports and the fun of socializing together.
The Trailblazer Award recognizes individuals that have worked for many years to support and in some cases, establish their teams and tournaments.  This year’s Trailblazers include:
  • Eric Bolda of the Rainbow Spinnakers Sailing Club not only for his leadership as Commadore of the club for a number of years, but for his years of service helping coordinate virtually all aspects of the club.  The Rainbow Spinnakers is one of the handful of LGBT sailing clubs in the United States thanks to the ongoing efforts of people like Eric.
  • Dan Schaefer of the Chesapeake and Potomac Softball (CAPS) League in honor of his countless contributions to making the CAPS league not only one of the strongest clubs in the DC area, but in the larger world of LGBT softball.  In addition to serving  as Commissioner of the league, Dan has directed the local MAGIC tournament for numerous years and helped with the 2003 Gay Softwall World Series which returns to DC in August.  Dan was inducted into the NAGAAA Hall of Fame in 2012 as a sign of the respect he has throughout the greater softball community.
The Community Support Award recognizes individuals, organizations or businesses that have supported the teams and the entire LGBT sporting community.  This years awards go to:
  • Burgundy Crescent Volunteers for their ongoing support of Team DC and, well, everybody!  Founded in 2001 and now with over 5,000 volunteers that have donated over 100,000 hours of service to local gay and gay-friendly organizations, including many local  sport clubs.  BCV is a great way for members of the LGBT community to become more active in their community while helping organizations that help us!
  • Wade Davis is not only one of the few openly gay former players in the NFL, but he has become a leading voice for tolerance for LGBT youth through his work at the Hetrick-Martiin Institute in NYC and as co-founder of the You Belong Initiative.  His visibility as a former pro athlete (including time with the Washington Redskins!) allows him to reach a large cross-section of people to help address issues of homophobia and encourage the open participation of the LGBT athlete on the collegiate and professional level.  We are pleased that Wade will serve as our keynote speaker at this year’s award ceremony.

The 2013 Champions Awards will be held on Thursday, July 18 at the City View Room on the campus of George Washington University at 1957 E Street, NW.   Tickets start at just $45 and include a dinner buffet and open bar.
